What we gonna do now is go back....way back.
I started playing the recorder at the age of 6 in 1st class at Seaforth Infants school, 1977. I moved to Beacon Hill then, and took my recorder into school and asked where do I continue my lessons. They said, what's a recorder? I showed them my pipe, and my learning books, and they made my play in front on the whole school. They must of liked it, as the school then brought in an music program, and started getting the kids playing the recorder. In 4th grade, I took up the Cello, which I continued to play in my school band until year 8 in high school. Then I discovered proper music. In year 9, I took up the guitar, a proper stringed instrument! In year 10 I formed my first cover band, the influence, whilst playing in the both the school jazz ensemble, and school band as guitarist.
Whilst at school, my band The Influence (formed of members in my music class) actually won an inter-school district school band competition in the rock section, and we then played in the NSW school band competition at the ultimate place to play a gig, the Sydney Opera House!!! Unfortunately we didn't win, but it was a buzz all the same....I also played at a lot of his school concert's soloing with my guitar and singing the latest tunes of the day, like "under the milky way" by the church, and Brian Adams "Heaven", a duet with my former girlfriend of 5th grade, Patricia Bailey on Piano.
Back to the band...after many exploding drummers, The influence was later joined by my brother, Ian, for many years as our drummer boy, and did a damn fine job. He and I also did a lot of the back up vocal work. He left school in '87, but came back in '88 for one of our school concerts where the influence performed once again. In fact our school had 2 good bands going, the other was called "Catus Sweat Band" who we used to duke it out with for the curtain call act! I did my HSC, 2 unit music + other subjects in '88, and dragged my band into the final practical music exam to perform some of our songs. I then did my thing with my effects that I did back then, tweaking out the feedback and playing with the delay modulation. They must of been pretty blown away by that, as I scored 98% in music, by far my best subject.
Oh, while at school, about 85 in year 9, I did work experience at Strobek Music at brookvale, and they were impressed i guess, cause I was the first work experience kid who sold a guitar. I got a job there part time on Thursday nights and Saturdays, and i got a staff discount - YAY! I was able to help out my friends in the band by buying stuff for them at a discounted price, and tricked out my band with some pretty good gear.
After school I ended up going full time with Strobek, selling stuff, and working on their then very new computerised stock system. I got to know the equipment extremely well, including the Akai S10 sampler keyboard (my favorite toy by far) and the new for the day Atari 1040STFM and sequencing software that was the shizz of the day. The influence had become Running Scared, we dropped a demo and started getting fairly well known on the northern beaches as a good party and pub band, playing Aussie covers of the day like midnight oil and spy vs spy. After a while i had a pretty good rig going, which I will try to describe later. We also had a small practice PA and our lead singer had some space in an industrial area in Brookvale where we rehearsed. We were gig sluts, getting any gig we could and working for nothing pretty much all the time.
I started doing some roadie work, and before I knew it I was doing that full time, touring around Australia with quite a few Sydney based bands. The best of these by far was Mal Eastick, a legend guitarist who co wrote and played on Bodyswerve with barnesy, and is a big SRV fan. I learnt a lot of him guitar wise, so i got into the blues, and started doing lighting and sound engineering. Next thing I knew, I had sold all my gear and gotten out of the game, a bit disgruntled that I never did anything really with it all.
Alienstream is my first foray back into the world of music since about 96, but I always had beats going, if not music playing, then beats going in my head, and i have kept a few guitars going serenading my girlfriend now fiancée. I've always been interested in hip hop, I could recite "white lines" word for word at the age of 6. And then I got into the dance culture in the mid 90's as you do. So I guess I can drop a decent rhyme if I feel compelled to, but I can also break out into song at any given moment!~. I plan on bringing aliens up a few notches with new mixes, new beats, new rhymes and new styles - so watch this space. But we will still keepin it fun and fresh and not too serious!
I'll add more to this story later, there's some other interesting tales, including me working for the Sydney Hotshots strippers, doing sound, lighting and DJing all at the same time. Then there was a stint as resident DJ at the Snowrider on Perisher Way... few other tales. If you got this far, you did well.
Peace out...
